How to Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Safely

Residents and small businesses are encouraged to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste at the IEPA licensed Regional facility at Naperville Fire Station 4 located at 1979 Brookdale Rd. every Saturday and Sunday, (excluding holidays) from 9 AM to 2 PM.

Acceptable Waste Includes:

  • Oil-based paint, wood stain, varnish and solvents
  • Auto fluids (oil, antifreeze, etc.)
  • Aerosol cans
  • Household cleaners & pool chemicals
  • Propane tanks (20 lb.)
  • Poison, pesticides and insecticides
  • Sealed fluorescent light bulbs and tubes
  • Flammables (oil, gas, lighter fluid, kerosene, rubbing alcohol etc.)
  • Household batteries (auto & sump pump, etc.)
  • Hobby chemicals and unknowns
  • Expired and unused prescription medications

Unacceptable Waste Includes

  • Smoke detectors
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Peanut oil
  • Ammunition
  • Latex paint (in order to dispose of latex paint in the regular trash, the paint must be hardened. To purchase paint hardener, visit your local hardware store. Or use an absorbent like kitty litter or sawdust. Once dried, leave the paint lid off so the driver can see that the can is dry.)

To safely transport materials, make sure containers are securely sealed. Materials should be left in their original containers with a legible label. Do not mix chemicals together. Place containers in a box lined with plastic and a layer of kitty litter as protection against a spill or leak. Transport items in the trunk of your car. When you arrive at the drop-off location, please stay in your vehicle.
